IS A CSA RIGHT FOR YOU?

HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

Is a CSA right for you?: Is a CSA right for you?

IS HAVING A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FARMER IMPORTANT TO YOU? DO YOU WANT TO SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL FARMER?

  • CSA members want to be able to shake the hand that feeds them: to connect the farmer’s face with the food they prepare for their families and to know the farmer's and what their growing habits are.

  • Joining a CSA means that you are committed to staying with a specific farmer through an entire season, come thick and thin.  You share the risks (unpredictable weather and/or annoying pests) as well as the rewards (sweet carrots, bumper crops, 1st fruits). The CSA members' motivation for supporting the farm is just as much about supporting the local farmer as it is about getting the full financial value of the share.

  • This relationship goes both ways. When you join a CSA, your farmer will work to create a connection with you. We try to add value to your life, by teaching you how our produce is grown and the best ways to prepare it.

DO YOU VALUE HAVING QUALITY NUTRITIOUS VEGETABLE INGREDIENTS THAT ACTUALLY TASTE GOOD?

    • Food that tastes the way it should, REAL FOOD because it’s grown with care in healthy soil and picked right before delivery.  In fact, CSAs often create food snobs, because once you taste how a carrot really tastes, you can’t go back to the watered down grocery store version.

    • You are paying for that quality taste when you join a CSA. If you really love cooking & you value taste, then you will LOVE being in a CSA. Our CSA is all about providing high-quality vegetables that make your home dining a delicious experience. You’re paying for that taste when you join a CSA.

ARE YOU WILLING TO TRY NEW FOODS?

While your box will include many of the popular vegetables, we can almost guarantee that there will be a vegetable at some point that you will have never worked with before. CSAs will help you try new foods & explore variety in the kitchen. No fear, every week we will help guide you with cooking tips and recipes.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A “DEAL”?  ARE YOU COMPARING CSA PRICES TO THE GROCERY STORE (WALMART, STOP & SHOP, MARKET BASKET, ETC…)

    • People who fully embrace the CSA model don’t look for their membership to be a “deal.” And they don't compare the CSA experience to the grocery store price table. You can’t do a cost analysis of each vegetable you receive in your box and compare it to what you’d pay at Stop & Shop/Walmart. Our vegetables have added value because you know how it was grown and harvested. Our produce is picked fresh and delivered directly to you, there is no middle man or travel time. This means our produce will last longer in your fridge then the weeks old stuff you buy in the grocery store.

DO YOU LIKE TO COOK? HOW MANY MEALS A WEEK DO YOU COOK AT HOME?  DO YOU USE VEGETABLES AND HERBS ON A REGULAR BASIS?  DO YOU LIKE TO EXPERIMENT WITH NEW RECIPES?

    • Picking up a large box of fresh vegetables each week is exciting for those who cook often but can be overwhelming if you don’t have time to cook or you prefer to eat out. Are you willing to take the time to prep and plan your meals using the ingredients we provide to you? Are you willing to get greens (lettuce, salad mix, spinach, kale…) and root vegetables as repeats because that is what is available? Be honest with yourself about your eating habits and your schedule.

    • There will be many weeks when you have the best intentions to be a super-chef and maximize your CSA experience, and then real life sets in and you’ll find yourself eating raw broccoli with ranch dip. It can sometimes feel like you’re “failing” but remember: eating more vegetables, even if it’s just with ranch, is already a win.

ARE HEALTHY PRACTICES IMPORTANT TO YOU?

Here at the farm we are investing in the your long-term health. Instead of relying on chemicals to fertilize and protect our crops, we follow all organic guidelines. We use compost to help maximize crop growth and production and use organic fertilizers. We let the soil do its job so that it can grow healthy vegetables for you with out harmful chemicals.

DO I HAVE TIME TO PICK UP MY SHARE EVERY WEEK? WHAT IF I AM ON VACATION AND UNABLE TO PICK UP MY SHARE?

    • This one is simple but exceedingly important. It can be difficult to remember to make it to pickup at the same time every week. A weekly alarm, smartphone reminder, or jotting it down on the calendar can help, as can assigning the responsibility to one member of the family.  If you can make the commitment to come to pickup every week, a CSA might be right for you.

    • We understand that things do come up so please reach as soon as possible. If you are planning a vacation and will be unable to pick up your share for that week, special accommodations can be made if we are notified ahead of time.

    REMEMBER...

If a CSA isn't the right fit for you but you still want to be a part of The Farm Stand's experience, you can support our farm by frequenting our roadside Farm Stand or finding us at the local Farmer's Markets.

If a CSA feels like a good fit for you, we would love to welcome you to the CSA family!
